Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin plays Nim, a smart 11-year-old child living a tranquil life on a remote South Pacific island with her oceanographer dad, Jack. Nim loves to read, especially her favourite fictional book hero Alex Rover - the world's greatest adventurer. One day, she replies to an email requesting information about a local volcano. She thinks it's from Rover himself but it's actually from the book's author Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster). When her dad goes missing at sea, she asks Alexandra for her help. The problem is the writer is agoraphobic and lives the life of a hermit in her San Francisco home. She reluctantly decides she has to come to the young girl's rescue and embarks on the epic journey to Nim's fantasy island.
